The best coats for men [Winter 2023]

Winter is a good excuse to equip yourself with a good warm, comfortable and elegant coat.

But which coat to choose?

In this article, discover all the types of coats for winter and my selection of the best coat brands.

The qualities of a good winter coat

For the winter, it's obvious, you want a very warm coat.

That said, it's possible to opt for a lighter coat if you like to pile on the layers. This can give a nice layering look.

In terms of colors, there are two schools for coats.

1. Sober coats

In this case, the preferred colors are:

navy blue

grey

the khaki

We can also think of black, brown or dark green, but these colors are more difficult to wear.

In any case, navy blue is the safest choice .

Hugo Jacomet of Parisian Gentleman sums it up very well:

“Every gentleman should have a good quality coat . Cashmere and wool are the best choices in terms of fabric, while even if black can be fine, navy blue remains the reference color in terms of elegance and sobriety . »

With navy blue, you are sure to be well dressed.

But hey… Sometimes you want something more colorful.

2. Flashy coats

The second school is to choose more flashy colors or a coat with a more sophisticated look.

In this case, you can build your look around this piece.

How ?

Choose clothes with neutral colors. This allows you to show off the coat and avoid bad taste.

In conclusion: If you are afraid of a misstep, start with a rather sober coat. If you are more adventurous, go for brighter colors like red, electric blue or mustard yellow.

3. An example to spice up the sober coat

I hear you. The fear of opting for a navy blue coat is that it will quickly become boring.

On the contrary ! I think it opens up a lot of possibilities to wear more interesting colors or patterns under the coat.

Here, I wanted to break up the uniformity of the coat with the sailor T-shirt from GoudronBlanc . Playing with patterns like stripes is an easy way to dress up an understated coat.

Types of coats for men (and the best brands)

The long wool coat

The long coat is the dressy winter coat.

It is mainly worn for formal events or to go to the office.

But it is also possible to wear a winter coat with a more casual style .

The long coat is not only reserved for the “suit and tie”.

There are different cuts of long wool coats. I present them to you.

The Chesterfield Coat

Born in the 18th century, the Chesterfield is the archetype of the long coat.

Formal coat, it is one of the longest coats. This overcoat stops at the knees.

It is recognizable thanks to its two flap pockets

Covert Coat

A cousin of the Chesterfield, the Covert is an overcoat of rural origin.

It was used in the countryside in England. It can be recognized by what the English call the "  poacher's pocket ", which is a large inside pocket.

It is shorter and more convenient to wear. However, it is less common to see it worn in town.

The Paletot coat

The Paletot is a double-breasted coat, which is considered a French coat.

Its fitted cut gives it a very elegant side.

It is recognized by its two upper buttons. These are further apart than the other buttons and cannot be used to close the coat. They are there for looks.

The Polo Coat

The Polo Coat is a double breasted coat. It also comes to us from the Anglo-Saxon world.

Popularized in the 1920s by polo players, it has become one of the emblematic pieces of the United States.

It is a loose and relaxed coat that is recognizable by its camel color.

The waterproof coat

Lighter than woolen coats, there are waterproof coats.

The Mackintosh

The Mackintosh (or Macintosh) is a long waterproof coat.

It is made with a cotton canvas that has been waterproofed through a vulcanization process.

This technique originated in the 19th century. The fabric is made with two layers of cotton sandwiched around a thin layer of natural rubber. This is what makes the canvas waterproof.

The coat can be recognized by its collar buttoned up to the neck. Technical element: it can be rolled up to protect the neck from the cold and wind.

The trench coat

The trench coat (more often called a "trench") is a double- breasted coat .

It is a coat that was worn by soldiers of the English army at the beginning of the 20th century. It comes from the same stream as the Mackintosh, but differs in the cut.

When we talk about trench coats, we often have in mind the Burberry brand. It is sometimes said that the brand invented the trench during the First World War. But some of my research leads to think that this one has only adapted to the needs of the military a type of long coat that already existed.

How to dress up a coat!

When I wear a warm coat (like a parka), I really like to wear it only with a T-shirt.

But for that, you need a good T-shirt!
